Requirements of the Hospice Art Therapist role:

• Licensed Professional Art Therapist (LPAT) / Board Certification in Art Therapy (ATR-BC) and completion of clinical internship or supervision hours as required for certification.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a therapeutic setting, with preference for experience in hospice, palliative care, or healthcare environments.

• Comfortable working in both private homes and facility settings.

About the Hospice Art Therapist role:

• Provides therapeutic art interventions to hospice patients and their families to help alleviate emotional, psychological, and spiritual distress during the end-of-life journey.

• Integrates artistic expression into the holistic care approach, helping patients and their loved ones cope with grief, loss, and transition.

• Design and lead individualized and group art therapy sessions tailored to patients' emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities.

• Utilize a variety of art materials and techniques (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media) to facilitate self-expression and emotional processing.

• Provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space for patients to explore and express their feelings.

• Assist patients and their families in addressing grief, loss, fear, anxiety, bereavement, and other end-of-life concerns through creative expression.

• Offer emotional support to patients, their families, and caregivers through the art-making process, facilitate family involvement in the creative process when appropriate, fostering communication and connection.

• Work closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other team members to develop personalized care plans.

• Attend interdisciplinary team meetings (IDG) to share insights from art therapy sessions and contribute to holistic care discussions.

• Communicate with the hospice care team regarding the patient’s progress, emotional well-being, and any notable developments in the therapy process.

• Contact care providers and clients regarding day-to-day changes.
